Wine writer Jim McMahon from Wineworld 2000 took the opportunity to review some wines at his neighbours’ gathering –

  • “Another success at my neighbours’ ‘drink fest’ was 2010 Classic RieslingWith shades of pale yellow and green colours, the nose offers a floral rose petal hint with lemon/limes coming to the fore.  The palate shows ripe citrus, grapefruit and passionfruit flavours in abundance with a slightly lower level of acidity which is soft and not bracing.  The finish is not quite off-dry but more moderate and would site will with oyster’s natural or pan-fried basa fillets with a dash of lemon or lime juice.”

Wine writer Paddy Kendler includes our 2010 Classic Riesling in his wine review –

  •  “An excellent example of Barossa regional Riesling featuring typical floral and citrus aromas and a fresh, lively, juicy palate.  Arguably  the best of its varietal style under $15 in the country.”

Ross Noble writing for The Courier Food & Wine section, looks at two of our premium red wines, with flying colours –

  • The Peter Lehmann 2006 Stonewell Shiraz reflects an outstanding vintage.  Dark red, with a bouquet of red plum and chocolate, its concentrated flavours extend into a long, lipsmacking finish.  Quintessential Barossa.”
  • “ Recognised as the champion of Barossa growers, Peter Lehmann took their fruit in the tough times of 30 years ago and is honored for this in the naming of the PLW 2006 Mentor Cabernet Sauvignon – Selecting cabernet for the Mentor demonstrates that the Barossa is ‘capable of making world’s best wines beyond shiraz’.  Fruit from old vines planted up to 60 years ago was chosen.  Deep red with blackcurrant and cedary oak aromas, there is seamless integration of berry fruit flavours enhanced by chocolate and vanilla.”

Tim Pawsey for the North Shore News includes our 2010 Barossa Blonde into his ‘must-have’ wine list for dinner parties during the fall season.

  • “The reality is that most of us have been sipping more wallet-friendly wines for a while, including our neighbour, who recently asked for help in putting together a value-priced case for a winetasting party. The plan was to come with a few "good deal" wines to stock for upcoming fall dinners.

The rules were: nothing over $20 (most were much less) and they must be widely available. The 12 wines we picked out (from Everything Wine but also all sold at BCLS) covered the global spectrum, with a couple of worthy sparklers (Segura Viudas, $16.99 and Villa Theresa Prosecco, $16.97) included for good measure. Both bubbles were well received, no doubt in part because they were the first wines people tasted - and remembered!

When the votes were counted, the more popular four wines (any of which would be worthy of Labour Day sipping or barbecuing) included:

    - Barossa Blonde 2010. One last summer sipper, not to be overlooked is this refreshing Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Semillon, and Sauv-Blanc 'cocktail': some lemon floral notes on top before a vibrant, citrus toned palate that's focused and zingy but not too dry. Great sipping or very food friendly. $15.99.

Wine Review Online writer Michael Apstein  writes about PLW’s 2010 Layers White  -

  • “An unconventional blend.  Flowery aromatics reinforce its lightness (11.5% alcohol) while a lovely lanolin-like texture, undoubtedly from the Semillon, contributes body.  A touch more acidity would make it perkier, but it’s still a good choice as an aperitif or with summery dishes.”
